Cooking Competition at Mayflower Prep. School

Every educational reform has its two tone twilight, and the new educational reform is no exception. The new syllabus for Basic Design and Technology has invoked a new sense of home care and healthy living (Home Science).

On the 27th of June, 2008. JHS 1 students undertook one of their practical exercises as a way of fulfilling the core structure of the new syllabus. There are 21 students in JHS 1 which were grouped into four. The students prepared variety of mouth –watery dishes, both local and continental.

The students used about two and half hours in preparing and serving their various meals. The group A, B, C and D were led by Sandra Selasi, Doris Gbeworzah, Evelyn Tersiah and Abigail Zetovi who prepared Fried rice, Jollof rice, Yam with palaver source and Banku with Okro soup respectfully.

Meanwhile, the judges did not only rack their brains before settling on the winner but also had a difficult task in selecting the most creative and delicious meal, since all the meals had something to write home about.

The usual calm Friday turned out to be a day of feasting. The primary children were not left out of the show; they thronged into the exhibition hall. The aroma from the various cuisines made most pupils startled. They waited anxiously for the “buffet” and those who were allowed to taste could not identify the best. It was as if their taste buds could no longer function properly.

I was not left out in deciding the best meal either. As the headmaster of the school, samples of all the various cuisine were brought to my office. I decided to do justice to the Banku and Okro soup first. Wow! That’s all I could say after taking a few balls; it was smooth and the Okro soup, wonderful. After tasting all the four, I adjudged the Banku and Okro soup to be the best followed by the Yam with Palaver source, Fried rice and Jollof rice.

Even though my result did not tally with that of the Judges, I think the students really did very well. It’s a pity that our educational system has been structured in such a way that vocational school is no longer attractive to JHS students because I believe some of these students could have been trained to own restaurants like “Agbamami” and “Asanka locals” in future.

Mayflower Prep. School goes on Mid-terms

http://www.mayflower.edu.gh/mayflower-prep-school-goes-on-mid-terms.html

Once again we have gone halfway through the term. The school will be going on mid-term on the 13th and 16th of June 2008.  Most teachers would be organizing their mid-term test before and after the  mid-term holidays.

It’s my hope that students would learn very hard from now till the end of the term  to ensure they perform very well in the test and in the main promotional examination which is just around the corner.

A Dream Come True

Headmaster working on Mayflower websiteOne year ago we dreamt of developing a website for the school. But after so much procrastination, we finally got our acts together and I am so happy with where we have reached. Even though the site is not fully completed, I must confess I now know what web developers go through when developing a website for their clients. Coming up with the content of the site ain’t easy.

A lot of efforts from the teaching staff and students in general has made this site possible. Its my prayer that all those involved in developing this site would ensure it is updated regularly. Special thanks to Kobina, Kelvin and Frank for all their articles. Special thanks also goes to George Appiah, he is actually the brain behind this site. Thanks a million.

2008 Junior High School Graduating Class

Mayflower Class of 2008

The class of 2008 shouted for joy when they completed Junior High School. I was very confident they would make their senior High School has they shouted ” Weygeyhey, Holyco, Botwe, Augusco” here we come.

The class of the “intellectuals” as they called themselves were the third batch of students passing through the school. So much was expected of them after their predecessor had made the school proud with their wonderful performance in their B.E.C.E that made the school to be ranked the third best school in Tema Municipality, however, no one had ten ones which this graduands promised to be the first batch to produce.

The journey to this point hasn’t been easy for this class, series of test were always organized for them every morning at 6.00am with punishment meted out to those who were late. Teachers even had to meet them on Saturdays and Sundays to put finishing touches prior to their examination. So I don’t begrudge them for their jubilation for having finished their last paper. It’s my prayer that they will have all the course to shout even louder when the results is released.

Excursion To Boti Falls in Eastern Region

Students of Mayflower Prep School on the umbrella rock

Students of Mayflower could not hide their joy when they visited Boti Falls in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The excursion was organized by the school administration on the 12th of June, 2006. Before the journey began at about 8.00am, prayer was offered and teachers ensured that all necessary arrangement were executed before the bus took off. Students were very comfortable in the air-conditioned bus. They were also entertained with an action movie in the moving bus.

Even though vehicular traffic on the Accra-achimota road made us to move at a snails pace, we arrived at the fall at mid-day. Thinking that I was going straight to the fall for a quick swim, our guide had other things in mind. He informed us that we had to visit the umbrella rock and the three branched palm tree.

The trek to the umbrella rock was very difficult. Passing through the jungle to the rock made the trip even more exciting. When we arrived at the site, i couldn’t believe my eyes. How could such a big rock be held in place for a long time without tumbling down? I asked myself. Some of my classmates decided to climb to the apex for a group picture, I didn’t dare because I felt more bodies would shift the rock out of equilibrium.

The umbrella rock

After spending much time under and on top of the rock, our guide urged us to move to the three branched palm tree. We were all amazed at the site of the tree. Most of the students did not waste time in taking pictures. I was not left out

Descending back to the reception, my eyes caught the sight of the falls from the hillside. It was a beauty. Majority of the student darted down the hillside straight to the falls.

Beauty of Boti falls

By the time I got to the fall, most students had removed their clothes and were swimming and having a nice time in the water. I felt like jumping out of my skin to feel the cold Boti water, I swam until the guide informed us it was time to go.

At about 3.00pm, we were all seated in our luxurious bus and as we departed back to school, we started to argue on which tourist site to visit next. The Boti falls is really an interesting place to visit. I would encourage all tourist who visit Ghana to make it a point to visit Boti falls.
